Portraits and Portfolios

The goal of a modeling or acting portfolio is not to simply fill it up with a bunch of photographs. A model's portfolio should tell a story about who the model is as well as the direction they are heading with their career. Three to five great images, is far better than ten mediocre ones. Your portfolio is a work in progress, it is never finished and will always evolve as you evolve.

These are the most important images of your career -Your photographer should:
   a. Treat you with RESPECT.
   b. Spend time with you beforehand to learn about you, your career and your goals.
   c. Provide you with a sample model release and sample contract PRIOR to your session.
   d. Work with an assistant or a multi gendered crew during the session for your protection.
   e. Will allow a stage name on the model release and redact your real name for safety.
   f. Execute the contract before the session and the release after the session – ALWAYS After!
   g. Provide you with a valid certificate of their own insurance.
   h. Provide you with a valid business license.
   i. Should have a business website – facebook is NOT a business website.
   j. Suggest that you bring several changes of clothes based on pre-discussed parameters.
   k. Should suggest you bring makeup, brush, hairspray and so forth for touch ups during your session.
   l. Stick to an agreed upon timeline of shooting and post processing of images
  m. Share with you the images during the session and immediately delete any that you are not satisfied with.
   n. Pay you fairly and promptly or if doing a TFS (trade for services- TFCD, TFP, TFI etc.) make sure it is a fair trade.
   o. Not show up late.
   p. Not surprise you with any pose, wardrobe change or idea not discussed previously.
   q. Not post any images on their website or social media until you approve of or until rights agreement has been met – this should be stated in the contract/agreement.

What should you have in your Portfolio?
3-5 Images for starters done in Natural Light. You should build up to 10 Images within a short time using both artificial and Natural Light. For 5x7 Comp Cards, you should have 5 Images (these can be the same images in your portfolio) – A closer for the primary image with one full length, one half length, one headshot and one of your choice to show personality, type cast or similar.
